`Small Business Saturday’ concept takes hold
American Express reports that its campaign to boost sales at small retailers on Saturday, Nov. 27, was effective largely because other groups embraced it. According to the company:
- Forty-one elected officials, including Illinois Gov. Quinn, declared the Saturday after Thanksgiving “Small Business Saturday.” Throughout the nation, 130 small business groups and public and private organizations participated.
- Roughly 1.2 million people “liked” Small Business Saturday on Facebook. Based on that traffic, the credit card issuer will give Girls Inc. a $1 million donation for programs to empower young women to become entrepreneurs.
- More than 100,000 small business owners downloaded point-of-purchase and promotional materials from the Small Business Saturday Facebook page.
- Participating small businesses and consumers sent nearly 30,000 tweets using the hashtags #smallbusinesssaturday and #smallbizsaturday.
